1. 1963: A woman goes into space for the first time
On this date in 1963, the first woman is sent into space in the Russian Vosok 6 mission. Valentina Tereshkova spent a total of 71 hours in space completing a full 48 orbits, which was longer than all of the time American astronauts had spent in space up to that point. Upon her return, Tereshkova received the Hero of the Soviet Union Award, as well as the Order of Lenin Award for her achievements in space. The United States didn’t sent a woman into space until 1983 when Sally Ride served a mission on the Space Shuttle Challenger.
2. 1884: The first roller coaster in American opens
Known simply as Switchback Railway, the first roller coaster opened in the U.S.A. on this date in 1884 at Coney Island in New York. Traveling at up to six miles per hour at a cost of just five cents, it was a huge success, and by the turn of the century there were roller coasters popping up all over the country. The very first roller coaster is said to have been built St. Petersburg, Russia in the late 1700’s and went by the name of ” Russian Mountains.” The Switchback Railway was the brainchild of LeMarcus Thompson, who would go on to build many different coasters all over the world before his death in 1919
3. 1968: Lee Trevino wins his first U.S. Open
Just one year after receiving his tour card, Lee Trevino wins the U.S. Open by a full four strokes over Jack Nicklaus on this date in 1968. Trevino was around golf almost his entire life; at eight years old he worked for a public course near his hometown of Dallas, Texas. It was there that he would go on to teach himself how to hit a golf ball, and even at that age made a name for himself as golfers would come watch this young kid crush the ball. After being discharged from the Marines in 1960, he went back to the golf course to make money hustling other golfers. Trevino would go on to win a total of 29 PGA tournaments and 29 more on the Champion’s Tour. He is also the only player to pull a win from the U.S Open, British Open and Canadian Open all in one year.
