1. 2006: The SmartCar announced for the U.S.
It was on this date in 2006 that Chairman of Daimler Chrysler announces that the Smart ForTwo would be coming to America. At just over eight feet long, the Smart ForTwo is barely bigger than most go-carts. But in a time when gas prices were through the roof, they claimed 40 mpg was too good for most people to pass up. Mercedes saw this as an opportunity to introduce the small city car to Americans. By September of 2007, there were said to be more than 30,000 registrations for the Smart.
