1. 1968: Elvis begins the taping of his Famous “68 Comeback Special”
It was on this date in 1968 that “The King” Elvis Presley took the stage in Hawaii to begin filming what would be his famous comeback special. He had been on somewhat of a decline since taking the world by storm roughly 12 years prior. A young NBC TV producer by the name of Steve Binder is said to have been a major factor in creating the “unplugged” style format. The idea apparently came to him while watching Presley jamming with some friends in his dressing room. In an interview more than 40 years later, Binder went on to say that he allegedly interrupted Elvis and told him “wait a minute, this is history, I want to film this.” Not long after that, Elvis walked out on stage in all black leathers and put on an incredible performance in front of a live audience. The special aired on NBC on December 3rd, 1968.
